Groovy/Grails/Java Developer

The ideal candidate will have successfully delivered on time, on-target informatics systems in a commercial biotechnology company or a large research institute. S/he must have expert level skills in object-oriented design, and Groovy/Grails/Java. Expertise in process control, process manufacturing, or similar applications will be considered in lieu of bioinformatics experience. The candidate must be prepared to join an intense, goal-oriented group to help build out existing software architecture with ongoing code deliverables. They are using the Grails framework, so someone who knows Web development/Grails/Java could would be ideal; a solid Java developer would probably also be fine, provided s/he has done significant web development.
Responsibilities
• Design and implement clinical laboratory applications, in collaboration with Director of Bioinformatics and team, using agile techniques
• Work with scientists and computational biologists/algorithm developers to enable easy integration of algorithms into production pipeline
• Provide recommendations for build versus buy decisions for various components in workflow, help evaluate products and contribute to strategic direction
• Provide accurate schedule estimates for team, per specifications
• Work collaboratively with scientists and lab technicians to provide extraordinarily easy to use applications
• Proactively communicate risks and deficiencies in plans to upper management
Qualifications
• BS in computer science, computer engineering, bioinformatics or related discipline; advanced degree a strong plus
• A minimum of 5 years of experience in commercial software development or equivalent
• Expert knowledge of Java, Groovy/Grails, web client applications, database design/implementation, Unix/Linux
• Successful implementation of database systems on an application basis (Oracle preferred) would be a strong plus
• Track record of successful system delivery in commercial businesses, clinical lab experience a strong plus
• Experience qualifying and quantifying buy versus build decisions, and integrating third party products into an ultimate user solution
