Software Engineering @ hi5, one of the world's largest social networks
at Cecilia Wong in San Francisco, CA
hi5 is one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing social networks. We’re the number 1 social network in 26 countries across Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia and Africa.
But we’re also small, dynamic and privately held. Your fellow team members will all be smart and motivated like yourself. And with frequent releases, you’ll have many opportunities to see your stuff go live in front of millions of users worldwide. Your work here will make a difference.
What do we look for in our engineers?
• outstanding software development and problem solving skills
• interest in consumer internet, social networking, and web 2.0
• ability to work on complex, large-scale, best-of-breed applications and infrastructure
Most of our software engineering positions involve coding in Java. But we value fundamentals and software design skills as much as experience with any particular technology. Most of all, we value the ability to think, learn and communicate.
Some areas of special interest to us are:
• Search (Lucene, Java, Unix / Linux)
• Anti-Spam Technologies (Bayesian learning systems, statistical AI techniques, Java, Unix / Linux)
• Ad Serving (interest in ad server technology, auction algorithms, XHTML, CSS, and Javascript, SQL, Java, Unix / Linux)
• Payments Systems (interest in ad server technology, auction algorithms, XHTML, CSS, and Javascript, SQL, Java, Unix / Linux)
• Open Social Platform (Open Source, front-end development, social media and applications, Java, Unix / Linux)
• User Acquisition (Data Analytics, front-end development, Java, Unix / Linux)
• Social Graph (graphing social networks, social media & applications, Java, Unix / Linux)
• Data Analytics (quantitative analysis, statistics / mathematics, user behavior, ETL systems, Java, Unix / Linux)
• Core Architecture (distributed software systems such as Hadoop / Pig / HBase / MapReduce / Sawzall / Bigtable, Zeroc's Ice, and Facebook's Thrift, SOA, RPC, Java, Unix / Linux)
• Internationalization (i18n / l10n, Java, Unix / Linux, translation tools & services including community generated translation -- check out: http://mashable.com/2008/05/21/hi5-crowdsourced-translation
More about hi5
• 80+ million registered members
• 44+ million unique monthly visitors
• Currently available in 24 languages
• One of the top 20 most-trafficked websites worldwide
• A founding adopter of OpenSocial
• Headquartered in San Francisco, California
Although our work is viewed and used every day by millions of people across the globe, the company is small -- currently under 100 employees. It's a fun, bright, fast-paced and collaborative place to work. Located in downtown San Francisco, hi5 is just steps from major public transit lines, including BART and Muni.
We're a founding adopter of OpenSocial, a community-driven specification for building social applications across the Web, and we're also a founding member of the OpenSocial Foundation, a new non-profit being formed to ensure the longevity and neutrality of OpenSocial.
A privately-held company, hi5 was launched in late 2003, reached profitability within its first year, and raised $20 million from MDV- Mohr Davidow Ventures in July 2007. For more information, you can visit http://www.hi5.com/ or http://www.hi5networks.com/
