part time PHP, jQuery, Problem Solving: Challenging tasks, small team, friendly company

at FoxyCart.com in ANYWHERE

Title of Position: Team Member

Description:
FoxyCart.com is a hosted e-commerce platform, built for modern web designers and developers. We are a small team, and we need to add somebody to our team who can wear many hats, primarily in user support (via our forum and helpdesk) and in programming (PHP, javascript). While this position is not exclusively for a support team member, it’s important that you can handle support.

Because the support team member position interacts directly with our users, it is extremely important to us to choose an individual that will continue to serve our users in the most amazing ways possible. The applicant should have a strong desire to serve others and help them succeed; should be comfortable explaining technical details or simplifying an answer depending on the audience; should exceed customer expectations on a regular basis; should be extremely patient; should be able to know the question that a user should be asking; and should be open minded about users’ needs, wants, and communication styles.

In terms of non-support job requirements, the more experience the better, but candidates must have strong proficiency in OOP PHP, javascript (mostly jQuery), and be extremely security conscious.

Requirements:

  • Strong HTML and CSS skills.
  • Intermediate to strong jQuery and JavaScript skills.
  • Ability to identify problems and create creative solutions using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and (often) PHP + MySQL.
  • A strong desire to help others.
  • Ability to maintain efficiency and effectiveness while working remotely.
  • Reliability, honesty with others, and most importantly, honesty with oneself with regard to deadlines and abilities.
  • Decent written English communication skills. (If you’re not sure, get in touch anyway. You might be better than you think.)
  • Strong references that can show a history of trustworthiness.

Plusses:

  • Experience supporting others in a public forum.
  • Experience as a professional web-developer.
  • Experience with e-commerce in general.
  • Experience with marketing and social media.
  • General understanding of programming concepts (if/then/else, case/switch, arrays, databases, etc.).
  • A good sense of humor.

Disqualifications:

  • Poor references.

Details:

  • Location: The position does not require relocation or an office presence. You may work from your own location, provided it is secure (ie. not a coffee shop, not on a public wifi network, etc.).
  • Hours: 10-20 hours/week to start. Can grow into a full-time position if it works out well.
  • Pay: Hourly rates will be based on the applicant’s experience.
  • Non-US programmers are encouraged to apply. We’ve had great experience in past projects.

Note:
Expectations are a very, very important part of our culture. If you are not experienced and comfortable setting conservative expectations (ie. “under-promising and over-delivering”), either don’t apply for this position, or have thick enough skin to handle criticism. If an expectation is set, we expect it to be met. We’d rather an honest “no” than an over-committed “yes” that falls apart. We’re a fun bunch to work with, but if you’ve had trouble in the past with managing realistic expectations, you probably should pass on this position.
