full time Digital Projects Editor

at Des Moines Register Media in Des Moines, Iowa

A lot of people are in a hurry to declare traditional news media dead. But at Des Moines Register Media we are optimistic about the future of the industry, and we're looking for a creative person to help push forward our cutting-edge digital development to shape that future.

The person for this job will bring a slew of ideas for translating content into experiences that appeal to both news junkies and general consumers alike. He or she knows the value of traditional news, but also understands that our industry's future lies in tapping into our other reservoirs of material in engaging and profitable ways.

Bring us new ideas and fresh perspective, and you'll get a chance to be at the forefront of change for an entire industry.

Responsibilities
• Developing interactive applications that give our digital audience the best possible product from our news and non-news content.

• Be a driving force in turning data into intuitive presentations of value to a wide variety of users, from data junkies to casual browsers.

• Guiding projects from start to finish, often building applications from scratch - especially mobile applications.

Qualifications
• Bachelor¹s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Demonstrable digital development experience.

• Programming skills in common web front-end languages. We're a PHP/mysql shop, but we're more interested in potential for growth than experience in any particular area.

• Basic understanding of relational databases strongly preferred.

• Mapping applications have become an industry standard, so candidates with experience and/or interest in applications such as Google Maps API, OpenLayers, PostgreSQL/PostGIS and Mapnik will stand out.

We offer a competitive benefits package which includes medical, dental, vision, generous vacation policy, retirement, 401(k), tuition reimbursement, and more.
